board games

This is gonna be a place to chuck board games as I recommend them at work! Usually just popular stuff - less about giving in-depth reviews, here, and more hilighting some stuff to keep an eye out for.

"I'm after something funny."

- a middle-aged white lady who looks like she takes joy in telling dirty jokes, or being 'politically incorrect'

Bogans is popular. There's also The Happiest Game and Marvel Heroes for that classic Cards Against Humanity experience - they're the same thing, except Disney and Marvel respectively.

Other adult games include You Laugh You Drink, which is about trying to do ridiculous prompts until someone cracks up, and which obviously gets harder the drunker you get.

Joking Hazard and Trial By Trolley are like Cards Against Humanity, except you're using cartoon panels to finish a comic strip. Horrible Couple and Horrible Therapist work the same, those are very popular at the moment.

Some other popular games are What Do You Meme?, Incohearant, and Not Enough Mana - that last one being a card game where taking shots gives you a mechanical advantage lol.

If you're after something absolutely filthy, 'Disturbed Friends' is heinous. On the other hand, if you're after something lighter, the ironically named Dirty Minds is a game that gives you suggestive prompts, but with completely innocent answers. The fun comes from accidentally giving naughty answers, and having your friends poke fun at you for it.

Recently, we've also had Go F* Yourself the card game, which is a rude version of Go Fish, and very popular. We also have a game called Slingz, and the naughty version gives you spicy prompts, and certain letters your answers have to start with. Still new, but it looks like the same sort of thing as the rest, so should be a good time if you've tried all the others and liked them fine.

"It's for a hens night."

For The Girls is exactly what you're after. Also gonna say Dirty Minds again, I like that one personally.

I'm also weirdly gonna suggest Monopoly Deal here, because I know people who played that for their hens, and had a good time? It super will depend on your friends in particular - depending on if there's people coming who don't play board games, you know, they might spook at anything weirder than the newest version of Uno.

Add To Playlist is a cute game to make playlists with your friends, though, if people feel up for that. I reckon you could also have a good time with Don't Get Got, which is a game of secret tasks where you try to make your friends do silly things without letting on that it's your 'prompt'- e.g. convince someone something is voice-activated, and getting them to try it.

"I'm after something fun. We're looking to play it tonight."

- a teenager or young adult, probably with a friend or two in tow.

Exploding Kittens, if you haven't tried that yet. The same company does a bunch of other similar games, I know people who love Here To Slay and Unstable Unicorns, but basically that whole range is gonna be easy to learn and fun to play. There's also an Exploding Kittens Board Game now.

An all-time favourite of mine is Organ Attack. I bought it for my sister for her birthday, and I keep stealing it to play with friends. Super need to get my own copy. You're basically trying to protect your 'organ' cards which sit face-up, and attack everyone else's organs by playing 'affliction' cards from your hand on your turn. Last person standing wins, it's a great time.

Poetry For Neanderthals, Hitster, Don't Press That Mine Turtle, Codenames, Selfish, and Yes or No all fully fit this bill as well. You might also get a kick out of Cockroach Poker, a game about bluffing your friends into picking up too many of a certain type of card. That one's fun because you can play it as 'first person out loses, everyone else wins'.

"I'm after something fun. Two player, mild to medium difficulty."

Hive is good if you haven't played it. You essentially want to surround your opponent's 'Queen Bee' by using your other insect tiles (they're all hex-shaped, it's really cute). Your insects all have different abilities to help with this, so it lets you have all sorts of strategies. Like chess but with bugs. But watch out - your opponent is trying to surround your queen too.

Codenames Duel is wonderful, if you've ever played Codenames. The good thing about it is it's co-op - you're trying to help your partner guess the right words while giving specific hints. I also like Jaipur, that's a market trading one. And recently we've had in one called Boop!, where the board is a 'bed' and you take turns placing cats onto the bed. Whenever you put a cat on a square, though, it 'boops!' all the cats around it one space outwards. The goal is to boop all your opponents cats off the bed and be the winner! It's super simple to learn but weirdly tricky to be good at, which is always fun.

That's all for now. Feel free to check back to this page, as I'll update it whenever I get specific requests, or make specific suggestions.
